L Marshall is one of our most creative singer/songwriters currently signed to a major label in the UK, my opinion. I really took to L’s music when he first dropped his mixtape “The Wait“, which is a real fluid/creative body of work. If i’m honest i think the delay from “The wait” till now was too long, and the suits really should have capitalised off that mixtape set up.
The “On the rise” interview you’re seeing with L Marshall is a year in the making. I’ll recap on how we got to this point. When L Marshall’s label sent me “The wait” over a year ago i told them “Lets lock something down with him asap”. Fast forward a year and some creative rescheduling, we finally got to sit down with Mr Marshall.
During part one of the interview i highlight L’s unique approach to his artistry in the lyrical sense to which he says, “It’s all about the first line. I have to have a line that grabs you.”
Knowing what i know of the UK industry, especially when it comes to marketing “URBAN” acts, its not always the smoothest transition! So i wanted to find out how it is for L Marshall as he’s knocking on the industry’s door with his first release “Castles“ out February 25th.
“Its frustrating at times. What i see is a constant disconnect. In any business you should have the product, the marketing and ultimately you have the consumer. What i find is a lot of things if they go directly to the consumer, they love it. But once you go through the marketing, things get over thought, it gets watered down. I would love to be that guy who opens the doors”

More information on L Marshall below.
An accomplished, multifaceted singer-songwriter, he co-wrote and featured on Wretch 32’s breakthrough top five single ‘Traktor’, penned ‘How We Roll’ (a number two smash hit for Loick Essien) and ‘One Thousand’ a track on Cheryl Cole’s latest album. Now carving out his own lane, L Marshall is emerging as a fully-fledged artist in his own right with the forthcoming release of debut single ‘Castles’ Ft. Little Nikki on 25th February 2013 through Mercury Records.
25 year old L Marshall has a background as varied as his music is diverse. He was born in North London but after his parents split up he moved to Fortaleza, Brazil when he was a year old, with his businesswoman mother. He returned to England aged 9, spending four years living in North London while boarding at school in the Home Counties, ending up at Stowe School in Buckinghamshire, former alma mater of Sir Richard Branson and legendary actor David Niven. Unfortunately, despite being incredibly bright academically, he got expelled, “I was the straight-A student who f***** up his education because I was more interested in making music.” At the age of 13 he had moved again, this time to Lagos, Nigeria where he remained till his late teens (attending the British International School with his friend Oritse Williams of boyband JLS). L’s adolescent years were marred by tragedy and hardship; losing his father, witnessing his younger cousins being mistakenly killed in a shooting and running out of funds whilst studying in Nigeria. These experiences have only furthered L’s determination to carve out a successful music career.
Back residing in London, L embarked on a journey that would lead him to eventually sign a major label deal with Mercury Records. With influences ranging from 2Pac, R Kelly and Eminem through to Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones and The Killers, L Marshall’s sound is a polished fusion of rap, urban, pop and rock. Already well-known and respected on the underground thanks to his mixtape ‘The Wait’ and collaborations with the likes of Wretch 32 and Sneakbo, LMarshall has been tipped for success by the likes of Radio 1, MTV, i-D and Rollercoaster magazine.
L Marshall’s debut single ‘Castles’ Ft. Little Nikki is an undeniably catchy, provisional but honest declaration of love with a lush arrangement and a strong hook, it’s the perfect introduction to the UK’s future, multifaceted, urban wunderkind.
